People think notarizations are boring. Most of the time, they are \u2014 until they\u2019re not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Oregon, I\u2019ve seen everything from signings done in half-finished basements to documents covered in cat paw prints. As a mobile notary<\/strong>, I\u2019ve learned that if it can happen, it probably will \u2014 usually right after I say, \u201cThis should only take ten minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, gather \u2018round. It\u2019s spooky season, and I\u2019ve got stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udc14 1. The One With the Chicken<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It was supposed to be a simple travel consent form. I arrive, set up my clipboard, and out of nowhere comes the sound of clucking \u2014 loud, persistent, and very close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The signer smiles. \u201cDon\u2019t mind her, she\u2019s part of the family.\u201d
Enter: a live chicken. On the table. Watching every move I make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently, she was the \u201cemotional support animal.\u201d I don\u2019t judge, but I did have to gently explain that witnesses have to be human.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We finished the signing while the chicken pecked at the corner of a notary stamp I now keep as a memento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson learned:<\/strong> When someone says they have \u201cone witness,\u201d always clarify the species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udce6 2. The Moving Truck Signing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If there\u2019s one thing about mobile notarization in Tillamook County<\/strong>, it\u2019s that I go where the people are \u2014 and sometimes, they\u2019re mid-move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This particular signer had packed everything. We\u2019re talking boxes stacked to the ceiling, Wi-Fi unplugged, house echoing like a haunted cave.
So where did we end up signing?
The back of a U-Haul, with a cardboard box for a desk and a camping lantern for light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every few minutes, a gust of wind would slam the truck door, and both of us would jump like we were in a horror film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson learned:<\/strong> Notarizations can happen almost anywhere, but the back of a moving vehicle is still low on the list of \u201cideal settings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udc8d 3. The Engagement Surprise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I thought I was there to notarize a simple affidavit. Halfway through, the signer starts fidgeting, looking between me, the paper, and their partner. I assume it\u2019s nerves \u2014 until they drop to one knee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right there, in the middle of the notarization.
Ring out. Tears. Applause from absolutely no one but me and my stamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wasn\u2019t sure whether to congratulate them or finish the acknowledgment first. I went with both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson learned:<\/strong> When you\u2019re a notary, expect surprises. And apparently, proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve ever lived on the Oregon Coast, you know \u201ccovered porch\u201d doesn\u2019t mean much in October. The signer insisted it\u2019d be fine \u2014 \u201cwe\u2019ll be under the awning!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By page three, the awning was dripping like a leaky faucet. By page five, the wind blew half the packet off the table. By page six, we gave up and turned my car into a mobile office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The heater fogged the windows, the dog barked from inside, and I couldn\u2019t help but laugh. It looked less like a signing and more like we were conspiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson learned:<\/strong> Weatherproof your documents \u2014 or at least have a Plan B that doesn\u2019t involve soggy loan paperwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83e\uddd9 5. The Backseat Ritual<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Late evening. Rural road. A signer texts that they\u2019ll \u201cjust be in the car.\u201d Fine, I think. Quick job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I walk up, and they\u2019re sitting in the backseat surrounded by crystals, incense, and what I can only describe as \u201cmanifestation energy.\u201d They tell me they\u2019re \u201ccharging the document\u201d before signing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I nodded, because what else do you do? The signature glowed (maybe from the candlelight, maybe from sheer spiritual power), and the job was done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson learned:<\/strong> Notarizing in Oregon means expecting a little weirdness \u2014 and occasionally sage smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These stories make me laugh now, but in the moment, they were pure chaos. Every signer has their quirks, every setting has its challenges, and every notary has a story that sounds made up until you\u2019ve been there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The key to avoiding your own signer horror story?
Be prepared, stay flexible, and if all else fails \u2014 have a flashlight, a towel, and a sense of humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
